I’ve been doing some drum tracking on my 238S 8-track.
There is very audible crosstalk from the hi-hat track onto a couple of other tracks.
I’m sure it is on replay, not on record.
Hi-hats have some quick fast attack and it’s this attack ‘click’ which is cross talking onto some of the other tracks during replay. Sounds not great!
Anyone have experience of these machines who could comment and help find a solution?
Thanks

Yes I tried recording the hi-hat at lower levels. You get less crosstalk at replay but of course a build up of background noise on the hi-hat which I guess I could use a gate to control.

I'm also getting crosstalk from the snare drum on to other tracks. Same issue in that only the percussive attack 'click' of the snare drum is being picked up. If it was the whole sound of the snare (or hi-hat) then it wouldn't matter but what is picked up sounds awful.

I tried recording 1kHz tone on one track at line up level. You cannot hear any crosstalk on the other tracks on replay. It does appear to be a problem with higher (but audible) frequencies.

I'm hoping to find someone else who has experience of recording drums on these machines so I can get an idea of whether this is normal or whether I have an issue which might be fixable.

I found the problem.
Some of the 0V connections to the audio cards had become slightly high impedance. This in turn meant that the head cable screens were not seeing a solid earth. I measured one at 25 ohms (to chassis) and this was enough to cause some quite horrendous crosstalk.
I used deoxit on the audio card and corresponding motherboard connectors and all is well now.
