I purchased a Portacapture X6 in February, hoping to add to our capabilities here with our independent filmmaking and other sound recording. We have been using a DR-70d for years for relatively simple spoken-word vocal performance recording alongside videography.

I’m getting non-clipping distortion when recording with the X6 over XLR. This will happen with different microphones and cables. The distortion isn't from peak clipping, it occurs apparently randomly within spoken performance recording when well within peak levels. It is visible in the waveforms, in the flattening out of peaks. When recording in dual 24/32bit, both files have the distortion at precisely the same moments.

I just did a side-by-side test with a pair of Sennheiser ME66s, using my old Tascam DR-70d and the new X6, recording a spoken word rehearsal. Same Mics, same mic distance, same cables used for previous recordings. Sure enough, the X6 has distortion moments where the DR-70 does not. Recording in 48 vs 96 makes no difference either.

I've attached a set of waveform images showing the comparison. Any thoughts?

I submitted a ticket to Tascam, I hope they can do something about it.
