I use a technique which mitigates programming the SR18 drum machine. I find a beat that I want to use and lay it down on tracks 9/10. Next, I may lay other instrument tracks in order to establish the chordal turn arounds and other dynamic parts of the song. Then, I go back to the SR18 and connect to channels 7/8. I record manually numerous drum pad beats from finger taps. In this way, I can produce a dynamic drum track without programming.
Depending on my wants and needs, I can merge all the drum signals by bouncing and record new sound over the refined drum track.
