Can't get guitar or electronic drums input working

Hi All,
Total newbie here and struggling... I can't get any sound from a guitar input or from electronic drums. I've tried different cables (all fine), different guitars, guitar/line (doesn't seem to make any difference) and different input jacks and still nothing. I can transfer filed via USB and they work so I'm guessing there's something obvious which i can figure out.
Ideally I'd like to plug my amp in directly and I have a headphone/line out jack but that doesn't seem to work either. Same with the drums, they have a direct out and a headphone out.
Any advice gladly appreciated. Not a good start from switching from Boss to Tascam.

Assign the input to the track you want. Turn up trim on the input to about the two oclock position, tweak trim if needed. Engage the record button on the track.
